Add a CommentHilarious and emotionally engaging. Lillian, the book's narrator, is the wise-crackingest voice since Holden Caufield. So many lines in the book stopped me dead in my tracks. I re-read them several times to luxuriate in their inventiveness and unvarnished honestly. I'm a guy so maybe I shouldn't go here, but the New York Times reviewer, a woman, also said, it's amazing that a male writer could create such a believable female narrator. This has my highest recommendation.

BTW, in the cover picture: I don't believe the character there is doing a Marilyn Monroe subway grate skirt-fluttering imitation.
Clever, with quirky characters, wry humor, and just the right amount of tenderness. Great for a plane ride or if you just want to forget about life for a while.

Compulsively readable, outrageously funny book with a sweet ending. Recommended!
I did not expect to like this as much as I did! Although this book does have an element of magical realism, it is a surprisingly minor part of the book. It is much more about the relationships between the characters and ended up being very heartfelt. I think this would appeal to a lot of readers.
A much deeper story than I was expecting! I had a hard time putting the book down and was intrigued the entire time!
Not the ending I was hoping for, but couldn't put the book down. Let's give it a credit for that.
