"Film noir was the dark side of the movies' happily-ever-after mythology. Sinister and sexy, it forged a new icon: the tough, independent, take-no-guff dame. Determined, desirable, dangerous when cornered, she could handle trouble - or deal out some of her own." "If you thought these women were something special onscreen, wait till you meet the genuine articles. In Dark City Dames, acclaimed film historian Eddie Muller profiles six women who made a lasting impression in this cinematic terrain - from veteran "bad girls" Audrey Totter, Marie Windsor and Jane Greer to unexpected genre fixtures Evelyn Keyes, Coleen Gray and Ann Savage. The book surveys the lives of these formidable women during the height of their careers circa 1950, as they balanced love and career, struggled against typecasting, and sought fulfillment in a ruthless business. Their personal stories - teeming with larger-than-life characters like Howard Hughes, L. B. Mayer, Robert Mitchum, Otto Preminger and John Huston - offer an illuminating counterpoint to their movies, such as Out of the Past, Detour, The Lady in the Lake, and The Killing. Then Dark City Dames revisits each one of these women today, fifty years on, to witness their hard-won - and triumphant - survival. On every page their own voices ring through, reflecting on their lives with as much passion, pain, intelligence, energy and humor as any movie script."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "harry cohn cast her to star in THE JOLSON STORY and stuck his 'paw in her crotch, saying, 'save that for me.'" "I never compared myself to other actresses, I just accepted that what I was given was good for me." " I was the dutiful daughter, I wanted to please them (the film studio)." "Cohn developed fixations on some of his actresses." "an inquisitive phone call from Errol Flynn earned Evelyn Keyes a face slapping from her Hungarian director husband." "on 9-25-33, john Huston killed a pedestrian while driving down Sunset Blvd. it set L. B. Mayer back some 400,000 dollars to hush it up with William Randolph Hearst." "Evelyn chose Huston over Flynn at a dinner party in Beverly Hills because she liked Huston's voice." "Stanley Kubrick was upbraided by Sterling Hayden's agent after THE KILLING's initial showing." "Cohn was curious about the size of Kirk Douglas' penis, and pestered Keyes about it." of the four ladies, ann savage appears to be the most beautiful, with evelyn keyes coming in a close second, and the other two, possessing a more idiosyncratic charm. contemporarily, concerning all the bru-haha over the Harvey Weinstein, scandal, I have to wonder, "did he ever have successful intercourse, or are those lucky recipients for some reason, keeping under the covers?" when the harpies are on the loose, rampaging, as they appear to be, you stand alone, my friend, they've never forgotten the witch trials, you see.
