Hummingbirds flying upside down. Slugs mating while suspended in midair. A muscular mole turning somersaults in its tunnel. So much is happening, minute by minute, in your own backyard. In this Uncommon Field Guide, author Patricia Lichen combines standard field guide information about habitat, appearance, and range with delightful and engaging descriptions of the little-known facts, surprising details, and amusing-even bizarre-tidbits rarely found in ordinary field guides.

A great collection of 2-3 page essays about the flora and fauna that share our environment here in the Pacific Northwest. I learned some interesting facts, and enjoyed the light, humorous writing.

I often recommend her books to people expressing an interest in the Natural World around us!! I've bought all 3 books and read and re read them yearly! :)

This is a wonderful book that had me laughing out loud. The writing is crisp and wry. I never knew that the animals I see every day were so interesting!

This book is great for small children as well as for adults. I'm debating buying a copy for myself.
