It can be difficult to take a reader convincingly into the middle ages - with enough historical detail to be authentic, but to keep the human interest. Cornwell can do both, walking a fine line between the earthiest and bloodiest details, and the action and intrigue of a more complicated 21st-century audience.
The first of a very strong (but brief) series of historical fiction by this prolific author.

The Archer's Tale is a really good medieval action packed adventure, that transports the reader to another time in history. The battle scenes, in this book, are descriptive and well written. There were times where I felt like I was thrown into the middle of the fighting, sacking, and bloodletting. That's just how good Cornwell's writing is.

The first and best book in the trilogy.

Bernard Cornwell writes historical fiction. His brand of historical fiction, at least in this book, is about as nail-biting and cliff-hanging as it gets. This book is definitely what one would call an action novel --- there's lots of blood; split skulls, gored knights and deflowered maidens --- the Hundred Years War's (between France and England) version of car chase scenes, AKGs and double-agents.This is a book you can't readily put down and when you do finish it, you'll go scurrying to the library for more.
