Set in the author's adopted home of California in the 1920s, this is Gene Stratton-Porter's last novel, a story filled with wisdom, a love of nature, and her own abiding optimism. In it a Master Bee Keeper, his bees, and the natural beauty of California restore a wounded World War I veteran to health.

Beautiful book; I've since read a few of her other works, but I'm glad I picked this one up first (if I'd started with Freckles - which was good, just didn't resonate like this one - I might not have bothered with any more of her works). I loved Jamie MacFarlane, his nobility, his unwillingness to be a passive victim, his need to do what is right no matter how hard. He is an amazing role model to learn from and emulate.
