The Definitive Biography of the First American Billionaire

Sporting a somewhat mysterious subtitle, as billionaire recluse Howard Hughes seems not to have kept any diaries, this biography tells the story of the man who built a huge economic empire and carried on affairs with numerous starlets, only to grow increasingly mentally unstable in his older years. Journalist Hack relies on letters, declassified F.B.I. files, memos, and the recollections of Hughes business partner, Robert Maheu, whose autobiography was cowritten with Hack. Annotation c. I love this book! I have the audiobook version and I learned so much about him!

I'd heard of Hughes growing up, and I saw "The Aviator" and of course being in Oregon knew of the Spruce Goose. But I had no idea of just how fascinating and tragic his life really was. Simultaneously an amazing genius and despicable creep, his descent into paranoid madness is a fascinating tale. No doubt he'd have been a real jerk even without the mental problems, but seeing the big picture of his incredible life is well worth the read.
