The Reader is both a literary surprise and a moral challenge: a riveting, provocative, and deeply moving novel about a young boy's passionate, clandestine love affair with an older woman, and what happens to them both when the secrets in her past are revealed.

Years later as a law student in Germany, Michael is shocked to realize that the person in the dock is Hanna -- who is not only obliged to answer for a horrible crime, but is also desperately concealing an even deeper secret.

Beautifully written, quick to read, but contains extremely heavy subject matter. I find myself constantly thinking about and revisiting the themes of this book.

I love what this book adds to the milieu of holocaust writing - a story for the fallout of what happens afterwards, and what this means to identity. Saw the movie first and loved it as well. Told in a simple style that lends itself to being read quickly.

A simple story, but densely packed with complex moral issues--guilt, redemption, atonement. The setting is a bleak post-war Germany where successive generations have had to deal with collective guilt.

Really good book! It was a quick read- I read it in a morning. Now I want to see how the movie lives up to it.

One of the must read books. That book is so amazing, and so powerful. I kept reading it again, again and again. The movie is extraordinary. Kate Winslet has brough Hanna Schmitz into life.

As thought provoking as it is easy to read. I'm not really a novel person but after hearing the Author being interviewed on BBC Worldservice 4:30AM one morning I rose to the bait!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

I read it after watching the DVD

The DVD is Good (Did I tell you I'm not really a Movie Person!) book is better

Why? Why does what was beautiful suddenly shatter in hindsight because it concealed dark truths?
