While the long shelf-life of this film may largely be due to nostalgic 80's kids like myself--it was released in 1984--this family friendly fantasy film by director Wolfgang Petersen (Troy, Das Boot) offers enough adventure and wonder to engage even the uninitiated. Featuring impressive large-scale set pieces, imaginative creature design, and strong performances from the young cast, this film will appeal to fans of other 80's fantasy fare such as The Labyrinth and Dark Crystal, as well as to fans of the more recent animated works of Hayao Miyazaki.

Good for children, I guess. But a horse dies drowning in quicksand (!).

A good older movie, I use to watch it a lot as a kid.

The movie does have strange puppet characters in it as well as human actors so it might be a scary for younger kids.

Incredible imagery. The animitronics breathe life and depth the characters and stand up to modern CGI effects. It means so much more if characters can touch and interact with these incredible creatures. Classic camera shots allow characters of different sizes to look like their interacting. Great sets and models. Wacky characters. Inspiring wisuals.

This is my favourite movie from when I was a kid and it still manages to holds up in my mind.

Movie is a bit dated, but still enjoyed by kids.
One somewhat scary part (for kids) when the wolf is killed with a dagger and blood is shown.
