This book is very dated. It was published in 2004, the year garage band was first released. Few, if any, Mac users are still running the version of OSX from 2004, and Garage Band has had several updates since then, too.

Instead of this book, I recommend the training videos on They have step by step instructions demonstrated by an expert in the field, and a written text accompanies the video. There are practice exercises that accompany the "course" so that you can tryout the new techniques you are learning.

You can reach from home or in the library through the resources page on You may need your library card and pin numbers to gain access.
