This was an excellent read. An abused 8-year old protecting her little sister Emma. Am just beginning to read "What happened to my Sister", the sequel to this book. You must read Me and Emma first to fully appreciate both of these books.

I read this book a couple years ago, and I still think about the ending. It's a great book and I highly recommend it.

This is a very poignant novel about a young girl living with poverty and horrendous abuse. Told from her point of view as an 8 year old , it focuses mostly on her relationship with her six year old sister Emma. Carrie, wise beyond her years, seems to have a really good take on how to survive her life, and sometimes even see the humour in some situations. The book is sad and inspiring and has an ending that will make you think about it long after you read the last page.

Emma and Caroline are as different as two sisters can be. Emma is fair and Caroline is dark. Emma is strong and silent, and Caroline is easily hurt and talkative. But after their father is killed in break and enter and mean, drunk, stepfather enters their lives, they suddenly wish for escape. What happens along the way to freedom and the people they meet who try and help them are the heart of this heart-wrenching story of survival at any cost.
