I recently re-watched Adventures in Babysitting, and enjoyed it as much as I have every other time I watched it. The ridiculous escalation of the events of the evening does not disappoint. I feel like this is a staple for anyone who grew up in the 80s.

Watch for Toronto locations. The blues concert happens at the Silver Dollar Room on Spadina at College Street.

I've always considered Christopher Columbus has always been like a diluted John Hughes for me. He doesn't have incisive commentary the way Hughes did. Columbus's work is less daring and more family friendly. But compared to the swill before and after Chris and John, he seems like a god in retrospect. Everyone knows about HOME ALONE, but ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING came first, with the sparkling personalities of young Elizabeth Shue and Keith Coogan. I expected silliness, but I got comedy and heart instead. I loved it. Maybe it was the sweet taste of nostalgia, but I would recommend ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING to everyone.

Maybe, maybe, if you saw it when you were 8, you might have a soft spot for it as an adult, otherwise...
Too absurd and schlocky.
The situational comedy c-o-u-l-d be funny, IF the particular scenes (e.g. being at the function the parents were at) were set up better.
Not my cup of tea.

One of the defining teen flicks to emerge from the 80s, Chris Columbus’ lightweight comedy about a hapless young girl’s babysitting night from hell may not have aged well but for those of us who can remember a time before smartphones and GPS satellites it’s a pleasant romp down memory lane. From Elizabeth Shue’s big-haired innocence to an early cameo by Vincent D’Onofrio as a golden haired (and very thin) garage mechanic this is pure bubblegum cinema yet I must admit I smiled throughout, especially at the ludicrously improbable finale atop a Chicago skyscraper and the prerequisite “new love interest” final scene. Perhaps it’s a good thing they don’t make them like this anymore, but I’m kind of glad they made this one. Guilty pleasure.

One of my favorite movies from when I was a kid. Thankfully none of my babysitting nights were this "interesting."
