Soon after the fall of the Taliban, in 2001, Deborah Rodriguez went to Afghanistan as part of a humanitarian aid group. Surrounded by people whose skills--as doctors, nurses, and therapists-- seemed eminently more practical than her own, Rodriguez, a hairdresser and mother from Michigan, despaired of being of any real use. Yet she found she had a gift for befriending Afghans, and once her profession became known she was eagerly sought out by Westerners desperate for a good haircut and by Afghan women, who have a long and proud tradition of running their own beauty salons.

Try Geraldine Brooks, Nine Parts of Desire. Factual, excellent.

I found it a not very well written,
slanted (to make the author look really good) account that left me unmoved; the plight of Afghan women is a serious human rights matter and has been much better dealt with in other books.

Rodriguez offers an account of Afghan life from a unique vantage point as an American beautician serving local and foreign women in Kabul, where she not only ran a salon but also operated a beauty school. Beauty salons are known for free flowing conversation and a flair for the dramatic, and the author makes good use of those talents in the telling of her time there. While many of her behaviors struck me as arrogantly American, I certainly found her story fascinating.
