I enjoyed this documentry, a story I knew nothing about. I thought It did a good job of portraying just the story of the 2 lovers & what they endured just to be with eachother.

Interesting DVD that goes beyond the gossipy, scandalous romance. Wallis Simpson, a twice divorced American, falls in love with King Edward VIII. Wallis was married at the time and people were pushing Price Edward to find a wife. He falls in love with Wallis, whose marriage to Simpson at that time was not too loving. Edward wants to marry Wallis, but a potential King couldn't (or shouldn't) marry a divorcee (or a Catholic - is that still true?!) Edward is made King in January 1937. There is so much resistance to his marriage to Wallis (the Queen mother would not meet her or speak to her), that he decides to abdicate (give up) the English King title in order to marry Wallis. Edward's brother becomes King George VI (the King in the film The King's Speech - he had a stammer) he was also the father of the current Queen - Elizabeth II. The politics involved were interesting, Parliament wanted to break them up, they had Wallis followed and the media made a huge scandal out it. Churchill actually supported Edward, he liked him and wanted to help him but that wasn't enough. Edward abdicated in December 1937, wed Wallis, they were married for 35 years and both eventually passed away in France. Interesting story considering the royal family today with their numerous divorces. Makes you wonder, could a potential King today marry a divorcee (or a Catholic?) The times have changed substantially since the 1930s - has the English monarchy also changed?

I thought this would be a gooey schmaltzy romance, a British Period Piece, and while there are elements of those two genres in the film, it is much more than that. This is a story of British & world history. This is the story of a controversial political sex scandal unheard of before its time. Lots of room for discussion. I couldn't tell if Edward and Wallis were just codependent on one another. They were both certainly drama queens. Thumbs up if you enjoy historical dramas.
