The story of Hedwig, a German transsexual rock star trying to find love and fame in America. A rude, raucous and unapologetic film that tackles issues of love and identity head on with nary a blink or moment's hesitation. The acting is first rate, especially John Mitchell's powerhouse performance, and the music rocks. Essential viewing.

Partly music video, partly wacky musical, partly drama, the film tells the story of a German who is abused in childhood, has an operation to get out of Germany, and ends up as the transsexual lead singer of a rock band. This is a drama-omedy. Sad and hilariously funny.

The sets are great as Hedwig and his band perform in dumpy restaurants across America, in the shadow of a big star that Hedwig may or may not have helped in the beginning – you learn the answer in the film, I just don’t want to give away too much.

One certainly wouldn’t be surprised if the music in a musical about a rock band was lame. Nope. The music in this is great. I found myself checking up on the composer to see if he’s done anything else. (Stephen Trask) – Sadly, not that much.

“You know what he was saving us from, was his f—ing Father. I mean, what kind of God creates Adam in his image and then pulls Eve out of him to keep him company, and then tells him not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. I mean he was so micro-managing. So was Adam. But Eve... Eve just wanted to know sh*t. She took a bight of the apple and she found out what was good and what was evil. And she gave it to Adam so he would know, because they were in love. And that was good, they now knew! Hedwig…would you give me the apple?”
