When Margot and her son, Claude, come to attend the wedding of her sister, Pauline, it seems as if a family rift is being mended. Despite their best efforts, Margot and Pauline revert to their most dysfunctional selves. It does not help that Pauline's fiancé is woefully depressed and Margot's lover is as narcissistic as she is. Margot's estranged husband can't seem to recognize that Margot cringes at his every effort at reconciliation. Margot and Claude have both a loving and poisonous relationship and she begins to pull Claude down with her as she sinks in self-absorption.

I was excited to see this movie after seeing the trailer, thought it would be "fun..".. But that was not the kind of movie it was at all... It was a weird, kind of dark movie...

A two-hour non-stop train wreck. Loved it! A study of a group of people for whom it can be accurately said that, individually and collectively, everything they do is wrong. Great fun. (Note: Psychologists I know who have seen it do NOT like it, because it reminds them too much of work,)

My favorite Nicole Kidman film. Top notch portrayal of the poisonous relationship between two sisters.

This movie is definitely wierd look at a dysfunctional family and its dynamics. Has some dry humor.

Although this movie was far from well received, I thought it was a great. The story and characters are fantastic and the acting is incredible on so many levels. I think you would really have to enjoy character driven movies to like this one, as it is not a film for everyone. I would recommend this to fans of dark comedy type dramas.

This is not a conventional movie by any means. However, it is a very interesting look at families and the relationships between family members. All actors give incredible performances, especially Nicole Kidman.

Watchable. This film has strange unlikable characters and the point of the picture after it's complete will leave you hanging asking "what did I just watch?" It's more like a snapshot into the life of these characters knowing that there's much more after the credits role.

Claude: Did she poop in her pants?
Margot: It happens to everyone, not just babies. It will happen to you too someday.

Margot: You didn't notice anything different about Pauline?
Claude: No.
Margot: She's pregnant. She told me. She's keeping it a secret from Malcolm and even Ingrid, which I think is unforgivable. Now she's gonna have to marry him. What's she planning on doing, getting married and not drinking champagne? Then she's just gonna be lying. I guess she's afraid she'll miscarry. She probably will. I think on some level, she's ambivalent about the marriage. That's why she's not telling him.
Claude: Are you stoned, Mom?
Margot: Maybe a little.
Claude: I don't like it.

Pauline: I was dating that guy Horace back then. Do you remember him?
Margot: Was that the guy who liked to rough you up?
Pauline: No, that was our dad.
Margot: Our dad used to strip down to his skivvies and beat us with a belt.
Malcolm: That man had a sexual screw loose.
Pauline: That's awful, that stuff that happens to kids. Malcolm was fondled by a male babysitter.
Malcolm: Just use that information however you want.
