The most gorgeous book I have ever read. Forever a place in my heart.

Beatiful book! I struggled with the animal cruelty, but the well-written prose and sweet characters won me over. I also loved the connecting story lines. 4/5 stars

What is even happening here? A children's book, originally intended as a short story then lengthened, contains many aspects unexpected. Directly open happy ending? Not at all. Instead, there is an elaborate scheme going on behind the simplicity of a malnourished dog with a mother calico, that has two kittens. In the Underneath, there is a heavy play on promises, love, and emotions. Feelings are what drive the characters to do all sorts of things, from sacrifice to betrayal. Maybe I'm not that metaphorical of a person, but I thought the ideas were a bit much for a child's book. 3/5 stars.

Had to go back and re-read the last 50 pages to more slowly absorb this well-written book's nuances. The first time I hurried through to see how the story lines converged and what would happen to characters I cared about.

Really good book

This book made me cry, I have a soft point for animals, but it was still a great book and I absolutely loved it. I hate animals getting hurt but I was happy with the way the story ended... I just wish the mother cat hadn't died.

great book

It is rare that I read a book in two hours flat, be it a children's book or not. It is even more rare for me to finish a book, close it, put it down, and immediately burst into tears. What a wonderful, wonderful read.

This is a great heartbreaking story that will catch any readers attention. The way Ranger's sadness is described is pretty sad and might leave the reader with tears but it also shows his kind and good heart. This is a unique story that ends unexpectedly that any reader would enjoy. I do not think it is suitable for younger children but it is definitely a good one for older readers.

"Do not leave the safety of the Underneath! Do not, under any circumstances, go out into the Open"

A snake who has lived in a jar for a thousand years knows something about hunger. She has been hungry for all that time. And now, just beneath her, on a lower branch, sat a small grey cat...

angiem99 Jan 18, 2012

IN THE UNDERNEATH the calico cat felt a sudden electric charge zip right threw her. She sat up. Wrong was everywhere. She looked around. Found Ranger astir. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Found Sabine, fur electrified. Wrong. Something was wrong. She looked again. Where was Puck?

No no no!
She heard him cry.
No no no!

She bounded to the edge of the Underneath just in time to see her baby lifted into the air by Gar Face.
No no no!
Lifted by the scruff of his neck. She saw his terrified face, saw the bottom of his tiny paws swinging in the air.

"No, no, no," she cried.

This is a heart felt story about a companionship between a hound dog (Ranger) and a Calico cat and her kittens. This unlikely pair become a family while struggling to survive underneath the house of their owner Gar Face. It is a beautiful story with an unexpected ending but a great book to read that will leave you in tears.

The Underneath is a about a pregnant cat who becomes friends with a dog, Ranger, which is unlikely because those two species are suppose to not get along. The Ranger advises the cat to hide underneath the porch to birth her kittens. Gar Face, the man that lives in the house is abusive toward animals so the kittens need not to get caught. Eventually the cat and the kittens are discovered and GarFace tries to use them as bait. The son is determined to save his mom and and sister, even though all of them don't make it.

The Underneath is about a dog-Ranger who is shot in the leg and held captive by his owner for protection. The owner, Gar Face keeps Ranger on a chain that can keep him in 100ft range of the old tilted house he lives in. A pregnant cat comes into the picture and Ranger decides to protect her from his owner by hiding her underneath the tilted house. The cat gives birth and Ranger names her kittens and treat them like family. Eventually, Gar Face sees the calico cat-the mommy cat along with one of her kittens and he captures them to use them as bait. The calico kitten did not make it, but her son is determined to save Ranger and his sister Sabine from the evil Garface. He uses his mothers words and the love he has for Ranger and his sister as determination. This book is amazing!

A pregnant calico cat abandoned in the bayou. An old hound dog chained to a slowly decaying house. The Alligator King, grown as big as a monster over the many years, and the terrible, scarred man who chases him - Gar-Face.

With lyrical language, Appelt brings these characters together as events are inexorably set in motion by the birth of two kittens – Puck and Sabine. Twined through the story of how a hound dog, a calico cat and her kittens become a family are two other stories: the story of how the evil Gar-Face came to this place in the bayou and an older story yet of an ancient creature - part human, part snake - of how her family betrayed her and of how she waits for revenge.

Short chapters make this a quick read, but be prepared – Gar-Face is truly evil. The Underneath is a powerful portrait of how devastating loss can be and how love can redeem and give meaning to a life.
