Written and directed by Tom Gries in 1967 based on an episode called "Line Camp" of the 1960 Sam Peckinpah television series "The Westerner", this western depicts the life of an aging cowboy on a hard-luck streak.
This film turns out one of the classic movies of all time.
It will probably last for all eternity as a classic in writing and in acting.
It appears that good.
If you like the Western, this is a must-see.

After listening to what others had to say about "Will Penny" - I was all set to enjoy this 1968 Western the way I like to enjoy any good Western - With a great, big, satisfied smile on my face. I sure do enjoy a damn-good Western!

To be sure - "Will Penny" started off just fine with a group of rugged cowboys engaging in some gunplay, and lots of cow-punching taking place on the vast Gordon Ranch, and the great outdoors, and the big, blue skies of Montana looming overhead, and in the distance, on the not-so-far-off horizon, the spectacular mountain-range....

With all of the makings of a damn-good Western well established from the start - "Will Penny" suddenly deteriorated (within less than half an hour) into a sappy, soapy, Hollywood-type romance between the title character, Will Penny, and a petty, brittle, demanding woman named Catherine Allen, who Penny found "squatting" in a cabin on the land that he was being paid (by the owner) to patrol and ordered to keep such squatters off said property.

Anyhow - At this point - I won't waste any more of my time here reviewing "Will Penny". It just isn't worth the bother and I'm too annoyed right now to even want to continue, anyways.

Of the dozens of movies Charlton Heston starred in during his life this one is hands down the best. A thoroughly enjoyable movie about a man we can appreciate, along with a woman and a young boy who both are also sympathetic characters. The host of outlaws are as ugly as outlaws ought to be, the rancher is as tight fisted as ranchers usually are with Ben Johnson doing the tight fisting. Good movie to spend the time for.

An overlooked, low-key, and elegiac late 60s western starring Charlton Heston and a host of great character actors. Heston said this was one of his favorite roles and his aging cowboy is a more subtle and melancholy character than he usually played. Donald Pleasence leads a band of marauders that he runs into and Joan Hackett is the woman he falls for. The supporting cast also includes Ben Johnson, Bruce Dern, Slim Pickens, and the Six Million Dollar Man. Though the tone is generally downbeat, there is still room for some shootouts.
