In a nameless town in a timeless era, where spirits and spells, witchcraft and ghosts are an everyday reality, sixteen-year-old Meridia has grown up lonely and neglected in a house literally haunted by the demons of her parents' soured love. When she falls for the charming and boyish Daniel, she sees her first real chance for love and happiness. She marries him and moves in with his family, unaware that they are harboring dark secrets of their own. There is a grave hidden in the garden. There are two sisters groomed from birth to despise each other. And there is Eva, the formidable matriarch whose grievances swarm the air in an army of bees.

This is the worst book I've had the misfortune to pick up recently. I pushed through to the end, hoping for something to get better, that the characters would be nicer to each other, that some reconciliation or at least truce between warring family members would be reached. I was profoundly disappointed. The magic was confusing at best, and I am still unsure of whether of not the people experience magic or were all just insane. In addition, the persistent gross characterization of bees as horrid creatures was simply terrible.

"With a setting drenched in fantastical and magical happenings (like mists that steal hats, mirrors that reflect other lands, bees that spy, and a woman who grows herbs in her skin), this debut novel "reads like a fairy tale for adults" (Library Journal). It concerns the story of Meridia, who grows up in a cold, lonely house and falls in love at 16. The young couple elope, but Daniel turns out to have a spiteful, vicious mother who likes to pit her daughters -- and Meridia -- against each other. The battle rages for decades, until Meridia is forced to decide whether her marriage or her sanity is more important. Readers who enjoy reading of realistic relationships set against colourful, imaginative settings will enjoy Of Bees and Mist." This book was full of magical realism and wonderful imagery. I really enjoyed this unique story!
