This novel is unlike any other that I have read. The characters range from the zany to the cruel to the ordinary. There are many different subplots and interrelated symbols throughout. There are historical fictional scenes as well as dream scenes where one is wondering what is real and what is other world. There are scenes that evoke Poe in tone. All told, this is a hugely entertaining novel - in all senses of the term novel.
