A deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. In accepting the assignment, Maisie finds her spiritual strength tested, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission also brings her together once again with her college friend Priscilla Evernden, who served in France and who lost three brothers to the war-one of whom, it turns out, had an intriguing connection to the missing Ralph Lawton. Following on the heels of the triumphant Birds of a Feather, Pardonable lies is the most compelling installment yet in the chronicles of Maisie Dobbs.

I listened to the book on CD rather than the downloaded audio. It was not abridged & it wasn't too fast. There was an interview with the author at the end. I was surprised to find that in the ebook, she was looking for Ralph. This name was always pronounced Rafe on the CD. I enjoyed the book, but I kept getting the 2 guys she's looking for mixed up.

My comment isn't about the book but about the reading of the book.
Someone should have advised Ms. Cassidy not to speak English with a French accent.
It is painful to listen to.

Audio:
I had the audiobook on my cellphone. As mentioned by 'Bookpusher' below, the reading is so fast that I checked multiple times that Overdrive's reading pace was set at 1x.
And I don't know if it applies to cellphones only, but there were a few spots that had a few digital(?) errors.

As a book:
This is the best of the series I have read from book I to book III. It's a far jump from book II. Impressive.

This audio book was abridged so it was very fast paced....I absolutely missed something because I was really confused at the end, but I like Maisie and would definitely read more.
