Reading Roots changed the way I view people and society. An important piece of American history, told with much emotion, this book should be required reading for all Americans.
"After reading this I solidified myself as a 21st century genius."
What i think about this movie is son unexplainable because this movie shows everything black people went through, and how we suffered. We should have been treated better NO OFFENCE TO WHITE PEOPLE.
Alex Haley, as many people, thought.. where did I came from? A must read novel! based on his family's history, begins in Gambia, when Kunta is kidnapped to be sold as a slave. A 10 year research!
After reading "The Help" I remembered watching "Roots" as a mini series way back in what was probably the 1980's. I loved it then and was keen to track down the book. It's the story of the author's ancestor Kunta Kinte, his life in Africa as a free young man, his subsequent capture by white slave traders and then on to the stories of each generation until we come to the author himself. It's all fascinating, from both a human and historical perspective.
However, I found the writing a bit clumsy at times which was a shame because the story really is worth telling. (I'm not referring to the pidgin English of the slaves which I found really fun to read.) If you're curious about this story, by all means give it a go.
I have never before read a book like this, that pricked every emotion I have ever felt - from light-hearted humor to revulsion and everything in between. It is one of my favorite books ever. I laughed, I cried, I even threw up at least one time. I am thankful to Alex Haley for writing this book. I even named my first son Alexander.
need to start on chapter 38
Amazing. This book is amazing. I read it again every 5 years or so and love it each time. I connect to all the characters and miss them all when I am finished reading the book.
This book changed the way I think about a lot of things, from slavery and racism to genealogy... it really made history come alive for me, and it made me feel so angry and disturbed at the way humans can treat other humans.
Unfortunately, time has not been good to Roots and Alex Haley. Much of his work has been proven to be either plagiarised or wildly inaccurate. It is highly unfortunate because the novel and the TV series were magnificent when they first appeared in the mid-seventies.
