SPOILERS PRESENT. This book feels like the editor ordered Mr. Weber to tack vampires on to the end of a perfectly good SCIENCE FICTION tale to appeal to a younger demographic. However the results where far more horrific than they sound. As I write this I feel embarrassed to acknowledge the fact that I read this book, and I believe this feeling shall endure long after this comment.

Add me to the list who found the ending appalling. I LOVE Weber's work (I'm re-reading the Safehold series now) and this was beneath him.

It sort of reminded me of the ending in War of the Worlds when the Martians suddenly started dying and everything was over. But Well's had a very plausible reason for ending it like that. Vampires just don't cut it.

I can't go into details of why I didn't like this book since they would constitute spoilers. I thought that the ending of the book felt inconsistent with the rest of the book.

Looking over some of the comments I think that some reviewers are too critical. This is a fun read and I enjoyed it. No author will satisfy an area where the reader has personal technical expertise. My wife groans at most medical dramas on television. I groan at the wrong application of tooling that I am familiar with. Suck it up ! This book format is meant to entertain-not educate.

A patron review for the Adult Summer Game: "Although the premise for the book is interesting, humans mounting a credible resistance to alien invasion, the denouement is very disappointing on many levels. In addition, there is, from time to time, excessive detail in the weapon descriptions. I would not recommend this book."

Do not read this if you value your self respect. It started out pretty well and rapidly declined, becoming nothing but repetition, guns (LOTS of technical boring details there) and wait for it... vampires! Only he didn't add the vampires until the very last chapter, with no foundation or anything. They just sort of appeared, just in time to save the day. I don't mind vampires, but they were entirely wasted.

Beware of the outliers who rated this highly. Note how many one and half star ratings this got.

I love Weber's work, but this one was awful. Not worth the time.

AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.

I, for one, and my friends all enjoyed this book. Just because some dislike it, not everyone will.

This is the worst book. the guy that wrote this should have his typewriter taken away. the ending was uncalled for and stupid beyond words. I want to say it's a rip off of Harry Turtledove but Harry would never stoop so low as to finish a book the way this author did. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK.

What a terrible stupid book. I am going to give a spoiler, because if you find this out, you will thank me. You will NOT read the book when you know what happens in it.

It is an aliens invade us book, in the mode of Footfall by Larry Niven. The science is hard, the details quite well researched and explicated, and the drama gripping and real. Until the last 30 or so pages of the 380 page book.

At that point, the science is flushed down the toilet, and the Earth is saved by vampires. Specifically by Vlad the Impaler. I want to find the author and punch him for putting me through all of this just to take a huge dump on me by finishing the book by calling on vampires to save the day. I feel like I lost 5 IQ points just by reading this.

DON'T CHECK OUT THIS BOOK! DON'T READ THIS BOOK! IT IS INCREDIBLY STUPID!

Aliens Are Invading! Half Of Earths Population Has Been Slaughtered In The First Strike! WHO CAN SAVE US NOW?! Well, there are four things in humanity's favor. 1) The aliens were expecting a pre-Revolutionary War tech base. They were expecting us to have barely discovered gunpowder; instead they were dealing with automatic assault rifles, tanks, F-22s, and the internet. 2) After the panic of the first strike died down, the majority of the human race had all the rage, grief, fear, and horror that a large number of Americans felt during 9/11/01. Quite the unifying force. 3) Even though the aliens took out the majority of the military, there were enough reservists, military en route to other locations, and retired military to provide training and security to civilians. 4) A 'super-army' under the command of a VERY experianced general has decided to protect humanity. The man that both enemies and allies called 'Vlad the Impaler' has command of a small force soldiers, both modern and from his own time period, to take out the alien bases. Yes, Dracula has come calling, and he's not happy. Why should he be? He has spent the better part of 500 years trying not to be a monster, and within a few months of the invasion he has to become the monster AGAIN! No he definately isn't happy.
