This is a highly detailed and somewhat disturbing account of how the Communist Party of China has over the past few years stepped back into the shadows, removing itself from the details of people's daily lives and allowing commercial endeavor to thrive and vast fortunes to be made -- while still retaining absolute political control by ensuring that all senior appointements, be they business, banking, local government, education, military, whatever are determined only by the Party.
The results include institutionalized corruption, nepotism, total lack of accountability, secrecy, lies and a series of environmental crises, health scandals and major crimes that get covered up.
China's new-found wealth and power may be illusory. Since no one dares to challenge the decisions of the Party bosses, China is "driving blind" unable to change course before hitting the next crisis. None of this bodes well for a stable future.
