This was one of my favorite Christmas specials when I was a kid growing up in the '70s. I saw it the first year it came out and perhaps it was on TV the next year too, and I eagerly awaited it (along with Charlie Brown and Rudolph!) I was a huge fan of days gone by...loved the Walton's Christmas movie (The Homecoming) which was the precusor to the series, too. Addie and the King of Hearts is great too. The characters are wonderful as is the time period. Would love to see that one again!

FIVE STARS for this production. For baby boomers and their parents this is an unique visit to your past namely the late 1940s when life was simpler but demanded more of an individual for their day to day existence. But it had its rewards too.

This is the first of four made for TV movies filmed in the early 1970s each one focusing on a different holiday as the background for the stories.
The three main stars brillantly bring to life the characters created by Gail Rock of a bright and saucy 10 year old girl who is an only child, her loving and wise grandma who raises her, and her stern and sad father who still grieves for his beloved wife dead for almost ten years.
Times are tough but the characters are tougher and make a life for themselves despite what happens using humour, love, determination, understanding and faith to help them obtain their goals.

Sadly, the other three TV movies are not available through the library being The Holiday Treasure ( Thanksgiving), The Easter Promise, and Addie and the King of Hearts ( Valentine's Day.) They are available from various book sellers on line and perhaps the library will purchase them to complete their collection.

If this is the first time you have seen this movie, I am sure you will enjoy your travel back to the not so distance past of your families or perhaps yourselves.
