Kim tells the story of how he and his family honour and struggle with the water that surrounds them as it ebbs and flows, season upon season, herding the water buffalo out of the floods to grassy areas for nourishment before the next rice planting. gangs of herders attack each other in the competition for buffalo and grass, attempting to skirt the French customs officers of 1940's Vietnam. raw living amidst beautiful scenery.

This Movie shows what life was like in Vietnam during the French occupation. The Water Buffaloes were driven all over the country during the Rainy season while they ate the land bare of any grass and starved to Death. In the Dry season they were used to plow the land for planting rice.

A sad story of rural poverty, exploitation, and violence for a constant struggle to survive against the backdrop of some stunning landscapes. Why didn't the main character seek a living as an itinerant musician? Would one see much the same situation in contemporary Vietnam?
