A not horrible movie for the period, attempting to navigate the troubled waters of sexual identity & the various modes of expressing love (or not) through sex & / or long-term companionship. If I had it to do over, it'd be pretty entertaining to watch the original 'Clash of the Titans' first, just to see Harry Hamlin's Perseus go from swinging swords & challenging immortals to being a jaded little SoCal homo Romeo in his little short pants & fancy sneakers. Situated neatly between gay lib & AIDS, the film is suffused with a kind of sanitized simplicity & optimism, that given enough time & the benefit of full disclosure, people will eventually figure out how to follow their biology to their heart & the right mate, with a little sad sigh for the loves & losses along the way. For that reason the film is fiction, portraying an ideal, but against the persistent backdrop of marital subterfuge & gay-shaming & all the hypocrisy that goes along with it, I find it's an ideal that's still worth talking about. Bonus material: whiskey-fueled man-cuddling! CR

a tolerable movie about coming out, with actors out-acting the paint-by-number script, Harry Hamlin is consistently believable, but Wendy Hiller in even her tiny supporting part shows everybody how to be riveting

This is a beautiful movie and was really ahead of its time in 1982 when it was released. I was struck re-watching it 29 years later how contemporary it seems. Really worth a watch. Great performances by all.

It took guts for everyone involved to make this movie. Hollywood doesn't do many gay films.
