The book, The Golden Compass, is the first book in a trilogy by Philip Pullman, takes place in the early 20th century, in a world similar to ours, but different. It follows the main character, Lyra, who has an eye for mischief and adventure. The book wastes no time getting into the action, with Lyra having to prevent the murder of her uncle, and him preparing for an expedition out into the arctic. The book takes its main genre; adventure, and adds an aspect of mystery to it, creating an engaging book that is constantly delivering. The wording and pacing of the book is excellent, however, unlike many book series, it sums up the main conflicts of the book in the first novel, however, some of the main mysteries of the book do remain unsolved for the next two books in the trilogy. The characters’ personalities are unique and interesting, and development is evident throughout the book, which, in my opinion, helps to create a far more engaging book when the characters are fun and interesting. Overall, this book takes two common genres and mixes them up in a unique fashion to create a book series that goes beyond expectations. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys non-fiction. 5/5. @Xeno of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library A really intricate storyline that often leaves you guessing and anxious to finish the book. The characters are interesting and complex and make the story very enjoyable to read. Although it is a fantasy story, the author touches upon many real life issues and themes that helped me relate to the otherwise very surreal characters. The beginning was a little difficult to understand at first since it takes place in another world with much different aspects that aren't explained very well at first. This story definitely makes you think. Overall, it was a story that intrigued me from the beginning and kept me hooked with the fascinating storyline and plot twists. - @bookanarchy of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
