This is one of the books that I still recall so vividly from my childhood, not just for its original and imaginative plot, but also for the vivid writing. The protagonist Lyra is one of those rarities in fiction: a truly believable character. She is petulant, stubborn, and coarse, but she is also protective, kind, and willing to stand up for what she believes to be right. I have read many books in my life, but very few of them contained characters that have still stuck out so strongly in my mind to this day. In short, it is a beautiful piece of literature, and would recommend it to everyone.
