Characters: 3/10 Plot: 5/10 Writing: 3/10 This book let me down. I forced my way through it, but it was painful. I read angrily. Mare's voice is angsty and filled with unnecessary metaphors. If I had a dollar for every time Aveyard used "bone" or "bones," I wouldn't have to work a day in my life. Examples: "Not sure of anything but the fire in his bones," "we entwined our fingers, weaving our bones together," "Deep in my bones, my sparks respond" etc. In that same vein, everything was stark. It's not just, "I feel dead inside," it's "the breathing corpse of Mare Barrow." That kind of intense metaphor would be fine if it wasn't on every page. There was too much internal monologue, not enough dialogue or action. Her action scenes are her best, but sometimes I couldn't follow what was going on. She also introduced new information as if it was common knowledge. Mare is convinced she's the center of the universe and the world bends around her. She doesn't respect her friends. There were some intriguing twists on common story elements (superpowers, rescues, etc), but nothing worth going through the drama.
