City Lights

a Comedy Romance in Pantomime
Jul 05, 2016Veepea rated this title 4 out of 5 stars
In the notes accompanying City Lights, Chaplin is quoted as saying a story, "either finishes happily or tragically. If you're going to leave it unsaid, it isn't perfectly written. Leaving it up in the air is to have no curtain to a story." I find the ending to this film to be very ambiguous, and people seem to have very different views on what happens between the Tramp and the girl. Is it happy or tragic--I don't know! It's a good film, but I found some of the gags were needlessly repetitive. This isn't my favourite Chaplin film, I prefer Modern Times of The Kid, but it's still worth watching.
