It's not for everyone, as others have said. But this film is beautiful, colorful, and ultimately not about Happily Ever After so much as Be Careful What You Wish For. A queen wants a child. A princess wants marriage. A king wants his lusts fulfilled. And a child wants a companion, a monster finds a bride, and magic makes someone young and beautiful. How it all combines is the film's weakness, since the end leaves everyone, including this viewer, dissatisfied. But I wasn't sure if I wanted more or I wanted neat conclusions. I really think I wanted more. The costumes and settings are amazingly lavish and are stars as much as the actors. Anyone waiting for more Game of Thrones can get some sex and violence and magic here. Again, it's not for everyone. But if you want dark fairy tales, this is a great way to scratch that itch.
