Very, very dark Danish police/dectective series based on the books by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The DVD is a trilogy of 3 movies starting with the Keeper of Lost Causes which introduces the main character Carl Morck a police detective in the Homicide division who botches an investigation which seriously harms his partner. He is demoted to Department Q, housed in some dusty basement whose only task is to review cold cases (crimes never solved). He is given an assistant, a Danish cop of mid-Eastern background (Assad) – the police force now tag the duo as the Drunk and the Arab. Carl’s wife has left him, he has a step son who is occasionally around and his only hobby seems to be drinking. His primary course of action seems to be act now, think later - which usually doesn’t help his investigations. So, his personal life is a mess and his professional life seems borderline, but he has a perseverance for justice; getting it done and getting things right. I think the creepy element is the fact that the cases are very old, so some bad guy/gal think they are off the hook – they are free, their crime will never be solved, they got away with it, but some boozy detective is after them! I’ll have to read the books now. Looks like they are filming book 4 now. The books in order of sequence are: 1-A Keeper of Lost Causes, 2-The Absent One, 3-A Conspiracy of Faith, 4-The Purity of Vengeance (Journal 64), 5-The Marco Effect, 6-The Hanging Girl, 7-The scarred Woman. Definitely Nordic Noir!
