If you were alive and watching movies in the 1980's and early 90s, Stranger Things will grab you by the nostalgiafeels. It draws on a large number of movies and television specials that 80's kids and teens would remember fondly. ST works as a tribute to movie or mini series from Stephen King, James Cameron, James Carpenter, and Stephen Spielberg, but it does so without being too obvious. It doesn't come across as cheap or derivative. That said, I can't decide if people who don't remember the movies and media of that era fondly would also enjoy Stranger Things. The amount of nostalgia is strong here. At its core it's a small town mystery-horror series blending fantasy and science fiction elements. I would like to think that it's a great show on its own, but it's hard to see past the nostalgia.
