Alt-America

the Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump
May 04, 2018DavidSpencer99 rated this title 4 out of 5 stars
This book has some big words and subtle definitions, but overall the story should prove convincing and informative for all who wonder what makes America great again for Trump supporters. The epigraph tells you what this book is about: “Trust, a mighty god is gone…and men no longer recognize the rules of conduct or acts of piety” once Pandora’s box has been opened. In David Niewert’s contemporary history, the election of Donald Trump opened the box, loosing the evils of nativism, racism, and authoritarianism on the United States. His 2016 win didn’t create the alt-right; it gave them legitimacy and mainstream relevance. In the bizarro worldview of Alt-America, conspiracy theories distort their relationship to government and society. Led by conspiracy theorists and race-baiters, these folks believe that there’s a New World Order that wants to subjugate American citizens. Immigration is a takeover by the lesser races. They think that the U.S. Constitution establishes the county sheriff as the supreme law enforcement officer, but it does not provide any basis for the federal government to own land. The federal government is an enemy-controlled force, to be resisted whether the policy addresses racial equality or gun control or public-land management. The global elites behind this plot are so clever that they stage “false flag operations,” government-orchestrated and controlled events to discredit the truthful views of Alt-America. A final chapter, “The Aftermath: Fascism and our Future,” provides a summation and explains how mainstream America can respond to this threat in a sensible way.
