This is the second best novel I've read in the last five years. Not only is the story intriguing, but Singh avoids every one of the "literary" cliches that drive me nuts. The language is clear and concise. The sentence structure is straightforward and clearly thought through to make every paragraph a powerful little gem. The Maori and the Hindi phrases are well explained without the translations being tedious. It was a joy to come across words that carry tremendous weight, like insouciance, that are deliberately chosen to express subtle connotations rather than leaving me with the thought that that a computer thesaurus was used to "upgrade the text." I love the glimpses of New Zealand landscape. Again, Singh's details are a subtle setting of the scene rather than the hokey "I went here on vacation and you didn't" travel guide feel of far too many recent books. I have already ordered a copy of A Madness of Sunshine, and will probably check out the Psy-Changeling series soon. If you like superior writing and beautiful prose, this is a must read.
