The Giver is one of the best books I've ever read. It has an engaging beginning, middle and end which isn’t very common. The Givers’ setting is a society where there is no colour or texture and where people are blindly obedient to the city’s committee which more or less dictates the city’s policies. Jonas, the main character, is about to turn twelve, the age at which you’re told what job you will have. A few months later, Jonas learns his job is going to be The Receiver, a person whose job is to advise the committee in times of uncertainty. The current Receiver transfers memories to Jonas by touch to give him the experience he needs to advise the committee. Jonas learns about colour and texture (among other things that we have and they don’t). Jonas wants to run away and in the process stumbles upon a new community. Jonas arrives with scratches and bruises but can’t wait to try his new life. The Giver is filled with suspense and ends with a cliffhanger that will get you to read the next book faster then you can read this summary.
