A wonderfully atypical samurai movie. This movie focuses on the home and daily life of a low-ranking samurai during the 19th century. It is about relationships, humility and quiet honor. There are touching scenes of the time he spends with his daughters. Several scenes demonstrate the character's unfailing dignity and self-discipline. He abstains from after-work socialization to care for his daughters and senile mother; he offers to fight in place of his friend for the honor of friend/love interest Tamoe yet he is humble with respect to his fighting skills. He also refuses to marry Tamoe not because he doesn't love her but because he doesn't want her to become disappointed with the decline in her standard of living by marrying him. The impact of these themes are achieved with fine acting by Hiroyuki Sanada, the Twilight Samurai, and the supporting cast. In addition, the cinematography adds intimacy and beauty to the film. Well worth watching...
