Not to be confused with "Collateral Damage." Michael Mann, the master of sleek, nocturnal crime films ("Heat," "Thief") directs this sleek, nocturnal crime film about a hired killer who enlists a helpless cab driver to take him around L.A. as he shoots some people. As with most Mann movies, it looks great, but the movie has two fatal flaws: 1. I couldn't get past the premise. Why would a professional killer use a cab? Couldn't he just rent or steal a car? 2. Tom Cruise, in a rare villain role, is hard to buy as the hit man and you just keep thinking "Why is Tom Cruise's hair white?" Those issues aside, it's skillfully directed, tense, and well acted by Jamie Foxx as the cab driver and a rather underused supporting cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, Peter Berg, and Jada Pinkett Smith. And, despite what another reviewer said, this is hardly an oldie; it was released in 2004. You might also like "Drive."
