Missing From the Village

the Story of Serial Killer Bruce McArthur, the Search for Justice, and the System That Failed Toronto's Queer Community

A fascinating look at how it was possible for a serial killer to kill 8 men and not be caught for many years. The book raises serious questions about how policing has been carried out in Toronto over many decades. In this specific case there was a lack of resources invested in searching for connections and clues that would link the 8 men to each other and the murderer. The fact that the men were gay and in large part new immigrants to the country seemed to make them invisible. The police did not document all the instances in which the murderer had gone into the police department voluntarily to "explain his side of the story" is part of the reason he wasn't found. It's only recently that Toronto has established a Missing Persons Bureau but the fact that uploading disappearances like these into a national missing persons database remains at the discretion of the local police is also disappointing.
