I thought that this book was beautiful. Beautiful composition juxtaposed against harsh ideals and traditions. A symbol itself for beauty through extreme torture. The description of footbinding - though not a unique theme in eastern literature was so expertly woven that I had to put the book aside and collect myself. A ancient yet relevant tale, who has not experienced that outpouring of venom that stems from hurt and betrayal? Who has not both received and given it? I read ravenously till one am. I could not have severed myself from this novel if I had wanted to.
