What is even happening here? A children's book, originally intended as a short story then lengthened, contains many aspects unexpected. Directly open happy ending? Not at all. Instead, there is an elaborate scheme going on behind the simplicity of a malnourished dog with a mother calico, that has two kittens. In the Underneath, there is a heavy play on promises, love, and emotions. Feelings are what drive the characters to do all sorts of things, from sacrifice to betrayal. Maybe I'm not that metaphorical of a person, but I thought the ideas were a bit much for a child's book. 3/5 stars. - @Siri of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
