In eighth grade Cassie and Lia make a New Year’s Resolution that they will be the thinnest girls. By the time they are seniors in high school they have gone to extreme lengths in order to fulfill that resolution. Wintergirls starts with Cassie’s death, and Lia’s desperation as she is overwhelmed with grief and confusion. Lia narrates the novel, giving readers a distressing view inside the mind of someone who can’t stop starving herself. Lia sometimes recognizes how destructive her eating disorder is and how it is hurting everyone in her family. Still, she can’t seem to let herself heal, and so she remains a wintergirl, a girl trapped between life and death.
