While gardening with grandma, a little boy declares "yuck!" when he sees a slimy, slithery worm, prompting grandma to give an impromptu explanation of the behavior and benefits of worms. The scientific facts (including tips on how to tell a worm's head from its tail and details about how worms fertilize soil) are delivered in a good-natured, encouraging tone, with humorous comments (via speech bubbles) from the worms themselves, and the cheery, softly coloured artwork depicts not only the abundant natural world above ground, but also the fascinating network of tunnels below. This appealing, informative book is must-read for young nature-lovers. Picture books newsletter June 2013
