This book is so creepy especially with some uncomfortable scenes between male and female characters. It like a big mind game for the main character. I enjoyed it and the story build up slowly. Recommend it if you’re into dark thrillers.

This book was so scary, atmospheric, and Gothic. I loved it!

Noemi receives a frantic - and quite odd - letter from her cousin where she tells her that she’s been hearing voices and her husband is attempting to poison her. Noemi rushes to find out what’s going on, but there may be more to this…

A promising start that eventually led to a ridiculous turn of events that was equal parts disturbing and horrifying.

I can fully understand why this novel is so highly acclaimed. It is a fun and engrossing read, the author has filled the story with excellent, beautifully crafted sentences, and the pacing is fantastic -- not too rushed, or too sluggish. …

A sumptuously entertaining classic gothic horror. Socialite Noemi Taboada's head is full of fairy tales at odds with her dream of being an anthropologist, but its up to her to do the rescuing! Glorious 1950's/Victorian settings (in…

This was a weird book. I skimmed most of it to see how it ended but I thought the plot/conflict was pretty far fetched and not very compelling. I don’t see what all the hype is about.

The only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars is because of how heavy it got. Just be aware that there are triggering scenes in this book, but the overall mood, writing, and atmosphere of this novel are so beautiful. It's art, plain and…

I read the whole book but I really did not enjoy the read… It seem to get into spooky paranormal things that were hard to imagine and the characters did not impress me either. I would not recommend it unless you like stories that are based…

I thought this was an interesting concept, boringly told. I just didn't care about the characters and their push and pull relationships. The stakes never felt very high or immediate. Maybe the gothic style is not for me? I don't know but I…

This was glorious! Creepy, unsettling, at times absolutely disgusting. A bit of a slow-burn in the first act, but not one that made me drowsy with boredom, but more of a subtle, steady pacing that allowed me to get used to the dark gloom…

I don't typically read blockbuster novels such as this, but it ended up on my library holds list somehow and I just read it in a couple of days. The plot meanders slowly and is not aggressive. The atmosphere that the author builds is quite…

First time reading a gothic novel, and I enjoyed it. I was warned about how creepy this book could get, so when I got to the weird parts, I was expecting it and was able to get through them easier. This book was fun and entertaining and so…

I liked this story but I almost stopped reading it. It's well written but it takes a while to get into the creepy realm in the last few chapters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this imaginative story about a woman with a strong will as the main protagonist. The description of the goings on in the house are so picturesque you feel like you're actually there. A must read for anyone who loves to…

WOW! What an amazing book! I will admit the book starts out slow, but when it picks up it is addicting. The story is very Bronte indeed. The story is about two cousins Naomi and Catalina. Catalina writes to her cousin about the weird…

Mexican Gothic is a hauntingly, twisted tale of one of the strangest families you will ever meet. Set way up high on a mountain deep in the remote Mexican countryside, High Place is a house like no other. The main character, Noemi, is…

I enjoyed this book and found it to be more creepy than scary. The main character Noemi, a fashionable debutante from a wealthy family is directed by her father to check on her cousin Catalina, who lives with her husband in a countryside…

Mexican Gothic is a fairytale turned nightmare, perhaps with a nod to Jordan Peele’s Get Out. In 1950’s Mexico, glamorous debutante Noemí receives a mysterious letter from her newlywed cousin Catalina. In frantic prose, she pleads for…

I liked this book. The writing was solid and the descriptive and poetic qualities is what made it the more haunting. I understand when people say that they cannot stomach some of the scenes, but they really add to the organic nature of the…

I had hoped for more with this book. Too many disappointments to list, actually. In addition to just being really grotesque and disturbing, the main character has no development. I made myself finish it in hopes that SOMETHING would redeem…

Looking for redeeming value. Mexican Gothic isn’t written in the vein of a classic. It’s devoid of truth, beauty or artistic quality. The “madness” is creepy, as in repulsive. The “darkness” and mycological reference is a dis to mycelium…

I read close to half of this book before returning it and moving on. It was too dark and brooding for my taste. I'm not sure what I expected... it's a gothic after all, but damn the story was suffocating for me.
