Great book. Slow start, but as the character development passes and the plot thickens, it’s a hard one to put down. The suspense is everything in this one. Happy read

Through beautiful writing, intricate plotting, and strong characterization, Silvia Moreno-Garcia offers a fresh take on the Gothic Horror genre in this novel. History, romance, thriller, horror – this book has it all.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies set in the Sierra Madres of Mexico. What's not to like? A fun read with a plucky protagonist. Espero que tienas un momento divertido.

"Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a unique and thrilling novel that tells a classic horror story in a new and exciting way. The main character, Noemi, is an intelligent and headstrong young woman. After receiving a frantic letter…

Mexican Gothic: My personal journey First 10 pages: Oh. Okay. Oops. I thought this was going to be some sort of literary horror/social commentary novel. Nope. Kinda poorly written, very one-dimensional stuff. First 10th: Finger…

I wanted to like this book so much. The setting is beautiful and promising. But it reads like what happens when a high school girl who loves books decides she can write one too (we've all thought it, doesn't mean we can all do it…

Starts out slow, get really creepy then gets...how shall I put this....sexually weird....should probably have a trigger warning. Very intriguing and sufficiently scary...loved the setting and the marriage of Mexican and Gothic themes.…

This was an amazing read! A haunted house horror that keeps you guessing what will happen next. I found it to be a good read with the descriptions of the horrors our main protagonist faces to be spine-chilling at times, and a lil weird…

Perhaps it is my unfamiliarity with Gothic as a genre of story, but I found the book enjoyable enough. I enjoy having time taken in stories, and for how short it is I felt it wasn't bloated with page filler like so many other books that…

Trippy and haunting. Not sure what I was expecting, but probably not that. To me didnt match the hype.

I don’t understand why people are so taken by this book. I found it…well, rather boring. The characters were stereotypical…the protagonist: a strong woman, behaves THIS way; a lecherous, racist old man must behave this way; and the…

Gothic indeed: the crumbling family mansion, the mysterious hold on the family within, the moldering fungus and the tyrannical patriarchy that irresistibly attracts Noemi, as she tries rescue her despondent cousin. Couldn't put it…

This is the beautiful unfolding of the burgeoning talent of this writer. She has come into her own. There is no stopping her now. This is the best kind of gothic fiction: constant foreboding that has you gripped and worried about what is…

Mexican Gothic is a horror novel following Noemi Taboada, a city girl who likes to spend her days attending cocktail parties and exploring. Noemi's cousin has been sending confusing notes back home, so her father sends Noemi to go make…

An old house, family secrets, portraits of dead people, incest, madness... all the old gothic tropes are here, with a new spin. Oh, and mushrooms. Horror is not my usual staple, and yet I loved this book. It was the blend of modern…

Fantastically creepy. I don't normally bother much with horror since I don't enjoy gore and things like zombies hold no appeal for me. But this was more psychological thriller with just enough fantasy mixed in to make it work.

I haven’t read a gothic novel since I was a teenager, so I was not sure what to expect from this book. It started off as kind of fun, sort of mysterious and eerie, but about halfway through, the plot took a very dark turn into more of a…

Spellbinding yarn of suspense and horror in Mexico. In the tradition of Edgar Allen Poe’s gothic horror. Really well done. Worthy of the master.

I basically read this within 24 hours. It's very atmospheric and I loved all of the gothic vibes. It's somewhat disturbing, at times gross, but it is such a captivating story that you will just keep turning the pages until the very end.…

Crimson Peaks crossed with Get Out and flavored with mushrooms. A critique I have heard of haunted house books is that they don't have a set of rules, just a bunch of creepy stuff happens because it is haunted. In Mexican Gothic, when the…
